A new feature within OS X Mountain Lion is Power Nap. First announced at this year’s WWDC, Power Nap allows users to keep their Macs up-to-date, allowing computers to continue receiving email and updating software while in sleep mode. With a new firmware update, those who are now using OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion can take advantage of this feature.
The only catch, though, is that users need either a 2011 MacBook Air or better or one of the new 2012 Retina MacBook Pros. The firmware update for MacBook Airs and Retina MacBook Pros has already been released and is ready for download, while the update for regular MacBook Pros is “coming soon,” according to Apple.
As Apple makes the full transition to SSD, more of Apple’s laptops should be able to access the Power Nap function. Until then, only some Mac users will be able to put their computer to sleep and then come back to it to find new emails, an updated calendar, updated Mac Store apps, and more.
