Chrome To Drop OS X Leopard Support

Leopard

Third party browsers are often very popular for people using older versions of an operating system. Usually, the Mozillas, Operas, and Googles of the world stick around much longer on older OSes than the Apples and Microsofts. That said, there is a time when you have to leave the past behind.

Jason Kersey, Chrome:

The Dev channel has been updated to 22.0.1201.0 for Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame[…] Please note, on Mac we now require 10.6 or higher, and this release will not be available if you are on 10.5 or lower.

Since launch, Chrome has been Intel-only, so people still on PowerPC Macs aren’t losing anything. Any Intel machine that can run 10.5 can also run 10.6, so no hardware is being phased out at this point. Unfortunately, early 32-bit Intel Macs can’t upgrade past 10.6, so the next time they jump OSes, the small population of 10.6 die-hards will be stuck.

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard was launched in October of 2007, and hasn’t seen an update since August of 2009. It’s time to move on, so this isn’t much of a surprise. If you need to update your old 32-bit Mac to Snow Leopard, you can still buy it on Amazon, so no worries there.
