In an email exchange with a 9to5Mac reader, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Marketing, Phil Schiller, commented on the scratches and chips that some are seeing on their brand new black iPhone 5s.
The email notes that the reader’s black iPhone 5 has gotten some “scuffs, scratches, and marks throughout the band around the phone” and wondered if Apple had any plans to fix this or address the issue of the new iPhone 5 getting marked up. Phil responded with, “Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal.” Aluminum is much softer when compared to glass, so minor chips and scratches are to be expected over time with the iPhone 5 because of the materials used to make it.
In some of the durability and drops tests that have been going on since the iPhone 5 was released, the back of the black i Phone 5 does scratch easier than the glass-backed iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. At the same time, though, the aluminum back is much more durable than the glass.
So I guess the only way to really protect your iPhone 5 from scratches and marks is to protect it with a case, although, ironically, none are available at Apple Stores yet!
