Just how far down the rabbit hole Twitter will go with iOS 5 integration is up for debate. TechCrunch broke the news that Apple was looking to integrate Twitter into iOS 5, and then John Gruber hinted that integration would go a lot further than MG Siegler assumed in his post. No matter how you slice it, Twitter integration into iOS 5 would be a very welcome surprise should it turn out to be true.
According to Siegler, Apple plans on letting users share their photos directly to Twitter from their iPhone, possibly using the twimg.com URL that Twitter uses internally. But, that’s where the speculation ended for Siegler, and began for John Gruber. Gruber sounded off on Daring Fireball with, “So close to the bigger story, but yet so far. Imagine what else the system could provide if your Twitter account was a system-level service.”
So, just how far this Twitter integration may go remains a mystery currently. But, can you imagine an iPhone where you can not only share your photos with Twitter, but also your bookmarks in Safari, or connect with your Twitter followers in Game Center? What about a world where you can get your direct messages directly to your Messages application instead of your Twitter application, easily replacing SMS for a majority of people with smartphones and data plans, and also save them a couple of bucks down the road?
Deep Twitter integration with iOS is something that makes sense, so much sense in fact that it’s surprising we’re only just hearing rumors about it now.
