Keeping up with the Jones’ over in Cupertino is almost a full time job these days. After pumping out innovation after innovation in the mobile computing market, Apple’s a lot more dominate in the treacherous smartphone market than Nokia these days.
It’s not all that surprising these days to hear people wax philosophical about how Apple, RIM, and now Android devices have taken over the reins from the once dominate Nokias and Motorolas of the world, but it might come as a surprise to most that Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Nokia’s CEO, has stepped down today. We feel for him. Competing with the iPhone isn’t exactly easy to do these days. But, perhaps the biggest shocker of all is that Nokia is replacing him with Stephen Elop, head of Microsoft’s Business Division. Elop will take over the reins and become the new Nokia CEO on Sept. 21, 2010.
Yup, you read that right. A Microsoft man is going to be running a phone company, just in time for the release of the new Windows-based phones coming out of Redmond. It should be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out for Nokia, and whether or not a Microsoft alumni can regain some of the lost market share that Nokia has managed to let slip away.
