Today is like Christmas for Apple fans. All over the world, people woke early to go to their local Apple Store or carrier to get their hands on the iPhone 5. In the UK and Japan, Apple Stores were met with huge lineups around the block as they waited for that fateful moment when they could enter the store and purchase their brand new iPhone 5.
In London, the line outside of Apple’s Covent Garden store split into two to help make it slightly more manageable. Security guards were present, guiding customers through the lines to the cheering of Apple Store staff. Those in line were allowed in in small groups, each met with applause, to get their unlocked iPhone 5.
The in-store demand was even higher in Japan since its online Apple Store wasn’t accepting pre-orders. More than 400 people waited outside the Nagoya Apple Store, which held steady even at noon after sales began hours before. The reservation system kept the line moving smoothly though.
Apple announced that it took only 24 hours to sell more than 2 million iPhone 5 pre-orders, and the in-store demand looks to be following suit. In the U.S., sales began at 8a.m. local time, with Apple Stores seeing lines of shoppers gathering over the past few days.
