I’m not sure if this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever laid eyes on, or if this is the most genius application ever. I’m on the fence, and quite frankly I don’t enjoy straddling a fence. It hurts, and I want kids one day… so, it’s time to make a decision!
I can’t deny how cool this application is and more importantly how beautifully designed it is. There is no doubt in my mind that these guys set out to put newspapers onto our Macs, and I have to commend them for succeeding. Great work. This application deserves a design award or two in my opinion!
But, some part of me really wonders just how successful this application will be. No matter how many RSS feeds I have in my RSS readers, I still manage to flip through a newspaper every single time I come across one. Eating breakfast on a Sunday morning with my laptop open just isn’t as relaxing for me as struggling and flipping through the Sunday edition of our local paper.
Here’s a thought. Imagine having a "kindle" like device that has multi touch capabilities. Its dimensions would be the size of a small macbook. Imagine if this device’s interface was designed like Times , and you were able to get updates every single day through RSS wirelessly, so when you woke up, it was already preloaded for you.
That would be appealing. A tablet newspaper, and its only function was to give you the news on a daily basis. One, where you could point to articles and flip pages like a real newspaper. Man, how awesome would that be.
Anyway, I digress. Times is a well thought out application, and is really great at getting you that news, but when I strip it down past its aesthetics, it’s just another RSS reader. But, I can’t deny the potential this type of application might have on future devices.
If you’re looking for a new and fun RSS reader, I’d recommend you check Times out. It provides a new way of looking at RSS, and at this point, I’m all for it.
