Rise of the Triad: A review

I’m always looking for old-school games, like those from the 1990’s. Some examples would be Doom, Duke 3D, and Sonic the Hedgehog. An app that came to my attention recently is Rise of the Triad, a game I always used to enjoy on the computer.

Rise of the Triad is a universal app for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. It is a direct port from PC to your iOS device. This includes the stupendous 1995 era graphics.

Rise of the Triad is a first-person shooter where you are part of a special operations team that is sent to investigate the cult activities that are occurring on San Nicolas Island. The full description is shown below.

Rott.Description

The game play is a unique experience on an iOS device compared to the PC version. The controls in particular take a bit of getting used to. There isn’t much in terms of the actual controls. You move using your left thumb in the direction you wish to go. In order to shoot your enemies you simply tap anywhere on the screen, excluding the turning area. If you feel the need to tilt your view upwards, you can tilt your iOS device down to shoot the massive amounts of tower shooters. It is this tilting, in particular, that takes some getting used to.

ROTT.Gameplay

The lack of updated graphics does not detract from the game play in any way. For those who wish to have a straight port, this is as original as you can ask for on iOS.

Rise of the Triad is a universal app, which will make it easier for those with an iPhone or iPod touch who want to transition to an iPad at a later point to do so.

If you enjoyed the PC version of the game, you’ll enjoy the iOS Version. Rise of the Triad is available for $3.99 on the App Store. The iOS version is cheaper than buying the PC version, which will cost you $5.99 at 3d realms.
