More Macbook Air rumors: SSD, cheaper, spec bump

Everyone’s expecting Apple to release new products at the event on Wednesday, and at the very least we’ll likely see some product bumps in redesigns. One of the hot topic items is the reworking of the MacBook Air.

Yesterday some were speculating that the MacBook Air would be smaller and netbook-esque, and today we’re getting some more confirmations that the new MacBook Air will certainly be smaller than its predecessors.

In addition to the smaller footprint, the MacBook Air will also be significantly cheaper than the current version. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. The first Apple branded computer I ever purchased was the 12-inch G4 iBook. I made the switch on a whim, but I also did it because I was looking for the smallest and cheapest laptop on the market. I kid you not. After doing research, at the time the 12-inch iBook was cheaper than any other 12-inch laptop on the market. I made the switch the day I realized that.

If Apple releases an 11.6-inch MacBook Air that’s smaller and cheaper than its competition, they’ll have a huge hit on their hands. iCore or not, a lot of people are already considering making a switch, and if my Twitter stream is any indication, a lot of people who know a lot about Apple products and technology would be willing to sell off their current models for the new rumoured Macbook Air.

In addition to the shrinking footprint and cheaper price-point, it’s also being rumoured that Apple has been working feverishly to lower boot times on the MacBook Air. It’s led some to think that an SSD default option could be in the works.

So what do you think? Would you buy a MacBook Air if it was smaller, cheaper, thinner? What if it has an SSD, but no iCore chipset?
