Google is working on a brand new high-end 10-inch Nexus tablet, according to CNET, and the web giant is teaming up with Samsung to co-brand the tablet for the first time ever.
Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch, has stated that the new 10.1-inch tablet will have a pixel density higher than Apple’s third-generation iPad. The 2560 x 1600 display will have a PPI (pixels per inch) of around 200, which could beat the 264 PPI on the 9.7-inch Retina iPad, according to Shim.
Compared to Google’s $199 Nexus 7 and an upcoming $99 tablet, this new tablet is “going to be a high-end device,” Shim said. But the biggest news surrounding the new tablet is Google’s partnership with Samsung, which will co-brand the new tablet alongside Google. As of now, Google has partnered with Asus on the Nexus 7 tablet.
A tablet co-branded between the two companies would mean a significant broadening of the relationship between Google and Samsung. Google already co-brands the Galaxy Nexus smartphone with Samsung.
Shim refers to this information about the 10.1-inch Nexus as “supply chain indications,” which usually means that the product could actually get made. That said, analysts and supply chain checks also usually end in a giant pile of erroneous claims and oversights. Shim has been correct int he past, confirming that Google would begin production on the $99 tablet in December; however, we suggest tempering your enthusiasm until we get official word from Google or Samsung on this new co-branded tablet. Mums the word from both sources so far, and we don’t expect that to change at any point in the near future.
