Apple Updates SMC and EFI firmware for some machines

The new Mac line is continuing to get attention from Apple as they release a couple more updates for both the general Mac lineup and particularly the post-October purchasing Macbook crowd.

There is an SMC Firmware update, which “is a micro-controller on the logic board that controls the power functions for your computer. The SMC controls various functions, including:

  • Power and thermal management, the Sleep LED, and battery.
  • Controlling the fans, supporting Sudden Motion Sensor, ALS, and the power switch.”

The SMC update is for quite a few models of Macs so you might want to check out your software update to find out if you’re affected.

The second update is for late October Macbooks, and it’s an EFI update. They are keeping the reasons pretty tight to the chest, stating, “This update fixes several issues to improve the stability of MacBook (Late 2008) computers.”

Now go run your software update.
