Apple TV now lets you choose movie size (1080p, 720p) for iTunes streaming

Living in the age of throttled Internet and packet shaping often makes streaming video across the Internet quite painful at times. With the new Apple TV getting 1080p playback capabilities, it had us wondering if we would be forced to download the larger file sizes automatically should our televisions support the resolution.

It turns out Apple’s given users the ability to choose what type of streaming they want within the Apple TV settings. Click on Settings, then iTunes Store, then click the Video Resolution button. Clicking will let you alternate between 1080p, 720p, and standard definition with the new Apple TV, and 720p and standard definition on the second generation Apple TV.

We should also point out that these streaming settings are only for iTunes rentals. Netflix, NHL GameCenter, and other streaming applications may have their own settings, so don’t rely on the iTunes Store settings to save bandwidth across the board.
