According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple’s facing a tight supply of lithium-ion batteries in the near future. The problem has been traced back to a “relatively obscure Japanese chemicals maker.”
It’s being reported that Apple, as well as other companies, are being directly affected by the recent events in Japan. Nearly 70% of all lithiium-ion batteries rely on a polymer produced by Kureha, but they were forced to shut down their factory near the Japanese quake’s epicenter on March 11th.
Many theorized that the Japanese tsunami/earthquake disaster could play a role in iPhone and iPad delays, but few foresaw it influencing iPod batteries specifically. Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment from the Wall Street Journal.
It’s pretty crazy how interconnected our world really is in today’s age. When you sit back and think about it, it’s mind blowing how globalization has made the technology of today possible.
