Apple’s Mac App Store breaks 100 million downloads and shuts up critics

The Mac App Store hit a big marker today. In just one year, the online store broke the 100 million downloads mark to become the biggest online software store in the world. When it was launched last year, the store was met with harsh criticism, in particular with respect to Apple entering a space that was already established. Mac users were used to purchasing and downloading their applications directly from the developers. If not there, MacUpdate served as a big source.

Regardless of what people thought, the Mac App Store became an instant success. Most developers swallowed their pride or just agreed to sell their products via Apple where they could. After all, they’d be guaranteed more views once the store went big. As it turns out, exactly that happened. Many app developers reported more sales and even more revenue. The 70-30 revenue split that has become common throughout Apple didn’t stifle them one bit. Now, the store has hit 100 million downloads with no signs of slowing down.
