On Friday the Apple versus Samsung verdict was announced, finding Samsung guilty and required to pay nearly $1 billion in damages. Both companies have released statements on the ruling, and now Google, which had previously remained quiet, has released an official statement on the verdict.
In the statement, Google attempts to distance itself from the controversy, arguing that most of the issues presented during the trial do not relate to Android itself, but rather deal with Samsung’s own software implementations and its hardware design decisions. Google writes:
The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players — including newcomers — are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don’t want anything to limit that.
For those that don’t know, Google lets Samsung, and other mobile-phone makers, use its Android OS in their handsets for free. Samsung is the biggest of the mobile phone manufacturers to use Android.
Google is definitely trying to stay away from the controversy with this statement, but does argue that the mobile industry builds on ideas that “have been around for decades,” perhaps suggesting that Samsung isn’t entirely to blame.
