When the iPhone 5 was released, Samsung added it to the ever-growing list of devices that infringe on its patents. Now Samsung is making the list even longer. In a new court filing, the company has asked for a few more of Apple’s devices to be included in its patent lawsuit against Apple. These devices include the new iPad, the iPad mini, and new iPod touch.
Samsung is claiming that both iPads infringe on Samsung’s UTMS cellular communications patents and other utility patents, which Apple says are standard-essential and therefore not assertable for infringement. This second major trial between Apple and Samsung has yet to be scheduled, but will likely be at the end of 2013 or sometime in 2014.
Apple has its own list of Samsung devices that it claims are infringing on patents, including the Galaxy Nexus, the Galaxy S III, and a number of other devices. Samsung’s newest additions won’t be officially included until the request is approved by the U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul S. Grewal, but it’s likely that they’ll be included.
