Apple’s biggest competitor in the mobile market surely is Google with its Android OS available on many devices in many different price classes. But a new report now shows that even Apple’s last-generation products outsell the cutting edge Android phone and tablet range “by far.”
Michael Walkley, analyst at Canaccord Genuity, checked the sales in AT&T as well as Verizon retail stores during the whole of April and found out that the iPhone 3GS and the first generation iPad are still under strong demand and “often outsold new Android products.”
Walkley says that the 16GB and 32GB models of the first generation iPad sold out in less than two weeks after the launch of the iPad 2 and that AT&T’s offer of $49 for an iPhone 3GS outsold the Android based HTC Inspire and the Motorola Atrix, both released in the first quarter of 2011. The same is true for the Android-tablet Xoom (Motorola) and PlayBook (RIM). According to the report, the iPad is “by far the best selling tablet,” whereas its competitors have to struggle with “modest sales.”
Interestingly, our April checks indicated continued strong demand for the iPhone 3GS at AT&T and iPad 1 at Verizon, as these older generation products with reduced prices often outsold new Android products, […]
We believe this highlights Apple’s significant competitive advantage, and these older products help Apple offer a tiered pricing strategy at key channels.
Due to the high amount of phones using Google’s OS, the number of sold Android phones is higher than the number of iPhones being sold. However, no individual smartphone could reach the iPhone’s record sales of 18.65 million last quarter, making it still the number one sold smartphone.
This new report once again shows that Google’s fragmentation of the Android operating system and its “openness” still might not be what the consumer market wants.
