Currently FaceTime is only supported over Wi-Fi, which is a little bit ridiculous when you get down to he nuts and bolts of how FaceTime calls are made. Long story short, a packet is a packet, and FaceTime calls could be sent using your dataplan.
One of the main reasons people jailbreak these days, according to our impromptu survey two months ago, is to gain the ability to use FaceTime over 3G. Well, you might not have to worry about it much longer, because you can currently get your FaceTime chat time in with Personal Hotspot.
According to Jordan Yee , FaceTime should work over a tethered connection with your iPhone 4. John Gruber confirmed that it works. So, if you have an iPad 2, or an iPod touch capable of sending FaceTime calls, you’ll be able to send your video chats over the 3G network while connected to your iPhone 4 using the new Hotspot functionality.
Kind of makes you wonder, doesn’t it. The carriers need to get into the 21st Century, and just open up video chat over 3G already. It’s pretty pathetic that people have to rely on these “loopholes” to make video calls while on the go.
That being said, the loophole could close at any time. But, until then, enjoy FaceTiming your friends from your Wi-Fi based iPad 2 while you’re on the go with your iPhone 4.
Heh, how’s that for confusing.
