As promised, Digg’s new Digg Reader, a potential filler for the hole that Google Reader will leave behind on July 1, has arrived in a new update to the official Digg app for iOS. Digg Reader is just one of the many options that is competing to be the home for all your Google Reader RSS feeds.
To get Digg Reader, just download the Digg app from the App Store. Open the basement/sidebar, select Digg Reader and then tell it you want to import from Google Reader. To authorize this data transfer you’ll need to log into your Google account and then sit back and wait for your feeds and folders to transfer neatly into Digg.
Digg makes it clear on the company blog that, “this is very much a beta release. Our focus over the past 3 months has been to build a simple, clean, fast, uncluttered reading experience. We will be working intensively in the coming months to build out all the remaining features and capabilities on our to-do list.”
New features will roll out for Digg Reader over the next few months, including more options like “View Only Unread” and “Mark as Unread,” new ways to rank and sort posts and stories, support for tagging, more sharing options, ability to import and export data, and much more.
It might be too soon to tell yet if Digg Reader is a sufficient enough replacement for Google Reader. Some people might wait to replace Google Reader until the very end, but you can download the new Digg app, complete with Digg Reader’s first beta, for free on the App Store.
