Apple previously stated that it was blown away by the customer response to the launching of the iPhone 5. Now we know why. Apple has just announced in a press release that iPhone 5 pre-orders topped two million in the first 24 hours.
This is a new record for Apple, doubling last year’s record set by the iPhone 4S. I think it’s safe to say that demand for the iPhone 5 far surpasses the initial supply, although Apple has stated that the “majority of pre-orders” will be delivered to customers on September 21.
Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing said, “iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 have been phenomenal. iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”
The iPhone 5 will be available at Apple’s 365 retail locations in the U.S. on Friday, September 21, at 8 a.m. local time for those who are brave enough to face the crowds and lines. Everyone who buys the iPhone from a retail location will be offered free Personal Setup service to get the iPhone up and running before they leave the Apple Store.
It will also be available through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, select Best Buy, RadioShack, Target, and Walmart stores, and select Apple Authorized Resellers. On September 28, the iPhone 5 will be launch in 22 more countries around the world.
