Selling 2 million iPhone 5 pre-orders in the first 24 hours on sale was pretty impressive. Now, Apple has announced that it has sold over 5 million units of the iPhone 5 over the first weekend of its launch and more than 100 million iOS devices have updated to iOS 6 since its release on September 19.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said of the iPhone 5’s success:
Demand for the iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible. While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.
The iPhone 5 is available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and the UK. It will be available in 22 more countries on September 28 and more than 100 countries by the end of the year.
iPhone sales set a new record, with last year’s iPhone 4S reaching 4 million on launch weekend, and the iPhone 4 seeing just 1.7 million during its smaller initial release.
Apple has also stated that demand for the iPhone 5 has exceeded supply and while most of the pre-orders have been shipped to customers, many are expected to ship in October, which we already knew.
