Steve Jobs flat out dismissed the notion that Apple was working on a 7-inch tablet, calling them dead on arrival while on a financial call this fall.
It wouldn’t be the first time that Jobs pulled a bait and switch, claiming Apple wouldn’t do something, only to do it a couple of months later. He did it with video iPods, he said that nobody reads books anymore, and he even said that netbooks aren’t better than anything. Apple then went on to release an iPod that played video, the iBookstore, and the latest MacBook Air.
Reuters has managed to dig up two separate sources willing to spill the beans on what’s going on in their factories. Of note, one “supply chain source” claimed that Apple was working on a “significantly smaller iPad that is almost half the size of the current model.” So, it’s hard to deny the rumors when Apple, and more particularly Steve Jobs, has dabbled in sleight of hand about upcoming product releases.
A lot of people keep saying that a smaller iPad 2 is coming to market. Sure, they’re rumors at this point, but it might be worth keeping your eyes and ears open. Some of these “sources” might be on to something this time around. Or, it could be a bunch of media agents making stuff up to get some page views. It could go either way.
