We’re all guilty of getting lost, pulling out our iDevice and checking our surroundings with Maps, and it seems that the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) is no different. The news from the ground in Afghanistan, courtesy of Shepherd Reporter Tony Osborne, is that U.S. aviators are using Apple’s iPad to reduce the workload while in the cockpit.
Chock full of maps and information about the southern regions of Afghanistan, they’re preloaded for ease-of-use. It makes sense really – when you’re in a cockpit of an AH-1W Cobra or an F/A-18 Hornet, you don’t want bulky map books taking up room. Also who knows what could happen when evasive manoeuvres are required.
Captain John Belsha echoed this saying, “It’s a game changer.” Wise words from a man who knows what he’s talking about (he’s a sensor operator on a KC-130J Harvest Hawk).
With further capabilities in training, it’s obvious why the USMC has moved over to electronic means of information sharing. Belsha continued:
“It takes five minutes to teach someone how to use the thing – it’s so intuitive and easy, you don’t really have to think about it.”
Let’s just hope the battery doesn’t run out mid-mission…
