Flipboard to include television shows and movies

Flipboard has announced plans to expand their social media app to include television shows and movies. According to Chairman and Chief Executive Mike McCue, this project will only get underway towards the end of this year, so don’t expect this change to take place any time soon. This move will require deals to be made with multiple studios in order to allow Flipboard to offer their content, and anyone familiar with the rise of other video streaming services such as Netflix knows that this takes time.

In a similar vein, there are also longer term plans to also approach publishers in order to also be able to offer electronic apps through Flipboard. By tackling web content, online video and digital publishing, Flipboard clearly plans to be the one-stop spot for all electronic consumption. The big question is whether or not Flipboard can do this as successfully as companies such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Unless they offer something special, they may be too late to the game to really corner these two new markets.

Along with this news, McCue has also indicated that the popular app will soon be available for the iPhone and iPod touch.
