Today Apple announced that it has sold a total of three million iPad minis and fourth-generation iPads in just three days. This doubles the first weekend sales of 1.5 million Wi-Fi only models of the third generation iPad in March.
“Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad,” CEO Tim Cook said of its success. “We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We’re working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand.”
The iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad are available in 34 countries, including the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and the UK, and will be arriving in a lot more countries later in the year, including mainland China.
Initial demand for the iPad mini far exceeded supply, though Apple hasn’t actually said how many iPad minis were sold separate from the fourth-generation iPad sales. Many pre-ordered devices have been shipped, but some are still scheduled to be shipped later this month.
Sounds like we’re a far cry from the “no one lined up for the iPad this time around” posts and conjecture from last week.
