Back in March, the FAA approved airlines to use the iPad as a replacement to old-fashioned paper flight manuals on US-based airlines.
This weekend, Alaska Airlines announced it will be the first airline to put Apple’s tablet in the cockpit.
The iPads are being used to track flight information, manuals, references and more. Alaska Airlines is using the popular GoodReader for iPad to show this information as a PDF.
“We’ve been exploring the idea of an electronic flight bag for several years, but never found a device we really liked,” said Gary Beck, Alaska Airlines’ Vice President of Flight Operations. “When the iPad hit the market, we took one look at it and said this is the perfect fit.”
The rollout should be done mid-June, and should allow pilots better access to more up-to-date information.
And hopefully not access Angry Birds at 30,000 feet.
