If you’re a student looking for an off-contract smartphone on the Sprint network, you’re in luck. Sprint and Best Buy have partnered to give all K-12 and college students in the United States a free year of unlimited talk, text and 1GB of data on Sprint’s network. Students can pay $10 per month to be upgraded to an unlimited data plan.
Seems like a good deal, right? Well, sorta.
In order to take advantage of the deal, the student must purchase a smartphone off-contract from a Best Buy store. While a two-year contract will not be required with the deal, students will be charged a “student activated price” with the off-contract phone, a price which makes the device cost more than a standard off-contract device. For instance, with the deal an iPhone 5S would cost a student $699 from Best Buy versus $649 off-contract from Apple.
It’s also worth noting that students who take advantage of the deal can refer friends for an additional one-year of service. The deal ends on January 4th, so act quickly if you want to take advantage of it.
