Apple has recently been awarded a patent, which, if released, could end up being a huge competitor to Google’s Project Glass. If you’re unaware, Google Glass is a new piece of tech from Google that allows users to wear a pair of glasses that connect to the net. The user can then access Google+, Maps and other services.
Apple’s patent shows a pair of glasses with dual LCD displays that cover the user’s direct and peripheral vision. This would create an insanely immersive experience. The patent reads:
A first display projects an image viewable by a first eye of the user. A first peripheral light element is positioned to emit light of one or more colors in close proximity to the periphery of the first display. A receives data representing a source image, processes the data representing the source image to generate a first image for the first display and to generate a first set of peripheral conditioning signals for the first peripheral light element, directs the first image to the first display, and directs the first set of peripheral conditioning signals to the first peripheral light element.
While this patent seems really cool, there’s no guarantee that this product will ever actually hit the market. However, Apple has been filing patents for wearable computers like this since 2008. After this patent was filed, Apple hired a wearable computing engineer in 2010.
