Quick Tip: Convert Units Using Your Mac’s Calculator App

If you often travel abroad, chances are you use an online currency converter when booking hotels and making other plans. But you might not’ve known that Apple’s built-in Calculator app has a currency converter…along with unit conversions for measures energy, time, and temperature, amongt others. Here’s how to do it.

Accessing Calculator’s Built-In Unit Convertors

To start, launch the Calculator app (it’s in the Applications folder), and type in the value of the unit you would like to convert. For instance, if I wanted to convert $100 USD to GBP, I would type “100” into the Calculator window. You can use the number keys on your keyboard for this instead of tediously clicking on-screen keys.

Now, look towards your Mac’s menubar, and find the Convert menu. Open it, and you’ll have a variety of unit conversions options at your disposal. Click on the one you would like to use, and a dialog box will slide out over the Calculator that asks you which units you’d like to convert to and from.

It’s worth noting that the app fetches updated currency exchange rates as you use it, so you can be sure you’re getting the most up-to-date information—an especially important feature in a world of ever-fluctuating currency values.
