Have you ever wanted tacos but didn’t want to leave your home or office? Enter the Tacocopter. The Tacocopter is a small octocopter that delivers tacos to San Francisco residents. San Franciscans can use their iPhones to request tacos to their current location via GPS. Once the tacos are requested, the recipient is told to stay in his or her current location and wait for the copter to drop off the goods. The folks at Tacocopter are also working on Lobstercopter for the east coast, but details have yet to be released about Lobstercopter.
So, while details are scarce as of now, this is a pretty cool idea considering the traffic in downtown San Francisco. And once a similar service arrives in Chicago, you can rest assured that I’ll be the first guy in town to have a taco delivered by quadricopter. Anyway, if you’re in the San Francisco area and would like to get in on the fiesta, drop your name in for beta access on the Tacocopter website.
So, now that you’ve heard my thoughts on the Tacocopter, what are yours? Do you think it’s a cool idea or will you be acquiring tacos elsewhere? Let us know in the comments. If you want extra points and are in the San Francisco area, let us know if you’ll be trying out the Tacocopter.
Update: So, we’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is is that Tacocopter is real. Co-founder Dustin Boyer said the following in a Quora post:
Yes, we’re definitely real :) There are a number of technical and legal hurdles that our team is working through. If you’re interested in pushing the boundaries of robotics and food please email jobs@tacocopter.com.
Now for the bad news: the other co-founder of the company, Star Simpson, recently told Wired that FAA regulations won’t allow them to deliver tacos via quadricopter yet. However, they are keeping the vision alive and will be working with the government to make this vision into a reality.
