Bruce Schneierover at Wired has a really good column posted about the implications the SDK raises for iPhone users. Now, I love my Apple products, and I’m pretty much a full fledged fan boy, but I’m not completely oblivious to what’s going down, down in the land of Cupertino! Some people might argue with me, and some people might be drinking all that cool-aid, but the fact that” Your iPhone comes with a complicated list of rules about what you can and can’t do with it. You can’t install unapproved third-party applications on it. You can’t unlock it and use it with the cellphone carrier of your choice. ” (Schneier) really pisses me off andsurprisingly isn’t pissing off as many folks as I thought it would. Why have we let our most beloved company dictate to us, that which we fear the most. Why hasn’t their been an uproar about it from consumers? Isn’t the primary function of a corporation to deliver products that meet consumers needs, when all is said and done?Doesn’t Apple have aresponsibilityto its consumers? After all, are we not the loyal followers, the flock that feeds the mouths of the share holders? Is that enough, or should I carry on?I guess what I am trying to say here is that without us, there is no money to be made, with out us stock holders go broke. With out us, there will be no iPhone 2.0. So, why don’t we start dictating to them what we want and don’t want. I for one, do not want a device that has strings attached to another greedy corporate entity. If enough people actually voiced this opinion we might have been able to avoid this whole damn problem. To Mr. Jobs, I state… maybe you should take your own slogan to heart and “Think Different.” Because the last time I looked, the iPhone is exactly like everything else in the cell phone market: tied to a shitty monopoly that is hell bent on gouging customers, who are determined to turn a profit at my sanity. When I buy an iPhone, if they ever come to Canada, it will be on a network of my choice, because…well quite simply, I own the device and can do whatever the hell I want with it. It will be unlocked faster than you can say… “Think Different”.
