With seven years since the start of this generation of video game consoles, consumer excitement and video game sales are continuously on the decline. NPD reports show this October as the 11th straight month where video game sales have declined since the previous year. Video game sales this October hit $755 million, while just a year ago they were a whole 25 percent higher at $1 billion in sales for October 2011.
While popularity in casual iPhone and mobile games continues to increase year after year, the standard 99 cent price for each copy sold doesn’t come close to having as much of an impact on video game profits as massive gaming blockbusters and new consoles do.
November is supposed to spark a revival to the video game market as it marks the release of several blockbuster titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Halo 4 and Assassin’s Creed 3.
Gaming fans are eagerly awaiting the next generation of Sony and Microsoft consoles that are speculated to be released around late 2013.
Regardless of declining sales, it’s probably safe to say that Apple won’t be re-joining the dedicated gaming console market.
