Starbucks has begun offering its Pick of the Week program directly through its iPhone app. Users can now download apps and books without needing the Pick of the Week cards that are usually available in store. All you need now is the free Starbucks app so you can download the latest Pick when connected to an in-store Wi-Fi network. That’s the catch. You still need to go into the store to pick up your free apps.
The Pick of the Week program first started offering paid content from the App Store and iBookstore back in 2011 by offering printed cards that customers could collect in store to redeem the app or book for that week. Each card had a redemption code that you would enter into iTunes to get your free download. In 2012, Starbucks started offering free song downloads through the Starbucks iOS app.
The new addition to its mobile app starts today, so customers no longer have to use a card to redeem anything. All it takes is one click from the inbox of the Starbucks app for iOS or accessing the Starbucks Digital Network, the company’s free in-store Wi-Fi network.
To celebrate its mobile expansion, Starbucks is offering a free iTunes download of Angry Birds Star Wars, one of Rovio’s many popular titles.
“This expansion, of adding apps and books, is the reflection of Starbucks and Apple working together to strengthen the relationship for customers,” Starbucks Chief Digital Officer Adam Brotman said. “This is another step in the direction that we’re going to integrate more things into our mobile application.”
Starbucks’ mobile application has over 10 million active users across both the iPhone and Android handsets and sees 100,000 downloads every week.
