Skype, the largest video calling platform in the world, has just added Skype for iPad to their lineup. The app brings video calling over 3G and Wi-Fi to the iPad and is available now in the App Store.
Obviously two-way video calling is restricted to the iPad 2 due to iPad 1’s lack of front facing camera. Skype has, however, enabled one-way video for Apple’s original tablet.
Skype for iPad is bundled with all of the features you’ve come to love about the platform, including video calling as mentioned above, as well as voice chat and text based instant messaging style chat.
You can also make phone calls to land and cell lines using your Skype Credit balance.
If you don’t already have a Skype account (where have you been?), you can sign up in just a couple of minutes. If you do have an account, all of your contacts will load instantly, and adding new contacts is a breeze with the new interface.
Hop on over to the App Store and grab Skype for iPad ASAP, as there are rumors swirling that it may have been leaked early and so may get pulled. We’ve tested it in Canada and the US and found it to still be available.
Skype for iPad will undoubtedly become a “must have” app for everyone with an iPad.
Hopefully all of the Facebook video chat kinks will be worked out soon, enabling you to strike up some video chats with friends who don’t even have skype installed, not to mention the expected launch of Skype for Xbox360 just around the corner. There are bound to be a whole slue of new people to chat it up with, video or otherwise, while you are on the go and they are pwning some noobs in CoD or Halo.
