On Wednesday evening the city council in Reno, Nevada, approved a tax incentive to bring two new data centers to the area. In exchange for a ten year $1 billion investment in two data centers, Apple would receive a US$89 million abatement in the city, county and state taxes.
According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, the data center proposed by Apple will cover 350 acres east of Sparks and will eventually include 41 full-time employees, 200 long-term contract employees, and will create 580 construction jobs. The other data center, a business and purchasing center, would be located in Reno’s Tessera District.
In what is being called “Project Jonathan,” the proposed data center is expeted to earn around $343 million in economic activity over the next ten years.
Assuming approval of this project goes as planned, which will take about a month, Apple could begin construction of the data center as early as August.
