Online retailer Other World Computing (OWC) is now offering a massive 480GB Solid State Drive (SSD) for current MacBook Air models. OWC say that the drive — which will set you back an equally mammoth $1579.99 — boasts up to a 68% speed increase when compared to the factory option SSDs made by Toshiba and Samsung, depending on which MacBook Air model customers own.
The Mercury Aura Pro Express range of SSDs comes in other sizes too — 180GB, 240GB and 360GB as well as the 480GB — and start at $480, which is far from small change for most. However, if OWC can live up to their 68% speed increase, it may be worth it to those that can afford the high price.
SSDs seem to be worth their weight in gold at the moment, but don’t feel too disheartened that you won’t be able to enjoy such fantastic speeds at the current price — the rapidly growing popularity of Solid State technology will almost certainly see a dramatic fall in price over the coming year or so. Let’s be honest. Who would have been able to afford a 1 Terabyte Hard Drive just a few years ago? Not me, that’s for sure.
For now, I’m perfectly happy with the 128GB SSD in my MacBook Air. The performance jump is incredible, and I already feel like I’m in the future. For now.
