Mark Zuckerberg announced today that Facebook, the biggest online social network in the world, reached 1 billion active monthly users on September 14. He made the announcement on his official Facebook page this morning, along with a new commercial.
In the commercial, Zuckerberg honors “the everyday things people have always made to bring us together: Chairs, doorbells, airplanes, bridges, games. These are all things that connect us.” The commercial shows people from all over the world using these universal objects that ultimately connect us all. Kind of like Facebook, at least for the 1 billion people using it.
Zuckerberg also sat down with Matt Lauer from the “Today Show” to talk about reaching this milestone, saying it is “an amazing honor.” During the interview, Zuckerberg discusses what he learned from his late friend, Steve Jobs:
I mean, he was just so focused, right? I mean for him, the user experience was the main thing that mattered and I think that there’s a lot that every company can learn from that. We’ve had a lot of that philosophy too, which is we just want to stay maniacally focused on building the best product for those people and I think that’s the path to building a great business and , you know, I think that’s something that Steve understood more than most.
