The Linux Foundation, a consortium of companies with an interest in the future of Linux, has scored a big supporter as Twitter has officially joined their ranks. “Linux and its ability to be heavily tweaked is fundamental to our technology infrastructure. By joining The Linux Foundation we can support an organization that is important to us and collaborate with a community that is advancing Linux as fast as we are improving Twitter,” said Chris Aniszczyk, Manager of Open Source for Twitter.
That’s not all, points out Scott Merrill: “Also joining the Linux Foundation are Inktank, a company that provides development and support of the Ceph distributed filesystem, and Servergy, manufacturers of efficient Power Architecture ™-based, enterprise-class Linux machines.” These substantial additions to the consortium not only lend it additional legitimacy, but it also could mean great things for the future of Linux. While Linux hasn’t taken off as a desktop operating system, it has been extremely important in the realms of servers, mobile, and embedded devices. Without a doubt, the support from large companies like Twitter will help the Linux ecosystem flourish.
Also worth noting is that Chris Aniszczyk will be keynoting at Linuxcon. Without a doubt, Twitter is dependent on open source technology, and wants to be involved with its direction in the coming years.
