Amazon has launched Kindle Unlimited, an all-you-can-read Kindle ebook service for $9.99 a month. The service gives Kindle owners access to 600,000 eBooks and “thousands” of audiobooks (using Whispersync Narration) including both Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings series. Currently, Kindle Unlimited is only available in the United States, though Amazon plans on expanding the service to other countries soon.
If you’d like to give Kindle Unlimited a go, you can try it for free for a month. The service can be used to read books on any Kindle-compatable device including iPad, iPhone, and Mac. All subscriptions include a three month subscription to Amazon’s premier audiobook service Audible.
Though the convenience and selection of Kindle Unlimited are great, it’ll be pretty tough getting your average readaholic to switch from their public library to a paid service. Heck, the public library system in my town has been offering free access to eBooks for years, though they don’t always have the latest releases, and only a select number of each ebook can be digitally checked out at once.
