Today, Amazon has announced that their famous Kindle hardware will finally be available in Japan. Amazon’s site has been updated with official Kindle branding, which includes logos and Amazon’s typical Kindle slogans translated to Japanese. Japanese support for Kindle has been long expected as Amazon has been rolling out Kindle hardware internationally over the past year. As far as pricing and a launch date, Amazon has given a good ol’ “coming soon” for both. We are also unsure of which Kindle models will be sold in Japan at launch.
While Amazon has been absent in Japan for quite some time, their competitors haven’t been. Amazon’s largest Japanese competitor, Rakuten, has announced that they will begin selling the Kobo eReader on July 1st. Other major competitors include Sony, a Japanese company that has been selling their eReaders in Japan for quite some time.
