Kim Dotcom, the founder of MegaUpload, has announced that MEGA will be launching today, January 19th, 2013. The service is set to compete with Dropbox by offering super cheap cloud storage plans. At launch, three plans will be available: Pro I, Pro II and Pro III, which offer 500GB, 2TB and 4TB storage capacities and are priced at €9.99, €19.99 and €29.99, respectively. Even better, free accounts will get a complementary 50GB of storage.
When on a Pro plan, users will be able to share files with ease, though you’ll be limited by bandwidth. The 500GB plan includes 1TB of bandwidth while the 2TB and 4TB storage plans include 4TB and 8TB of bandwidth, respectively.
The service will offer a web client where users can view and interact with their files. MEGA is also promising that a Windows client is in beta and that OS X and Linux versions of the app are in the making. We should also see mobile access to the app in the future.
The web client also has a Contacts and Inbox tab, though beta testers have reportedly not been able to use these services as of yet. TechCrunch has reported that the service may soon offer email services, domain names and hosting via Instra. Dotcom also wants the site to compete with Google Docs with built-in word processing, spreadsheet and calendar apps.
