When the first iPhone was announced, I was one of the many that thought “I would buy that if it didn’t have a phone in it.” Not only am I not a big user of telecommunications, but I also have horrible AT&T signal in my area. My wish was granted, and the iPod Touch was released. I bought a sixteen gigabyte first generation Touch, and I purchased every single update. First was the Apple apps (Mail, etc.) that were iPhone-only in the beginning. Next was 2.0, and not long after was 3.0. I must say I was a little bummed to hear that iOS 4.0 doesn’t support the first generation touch, but it’s not exactly unexpected nor unfair.
I don’t want to be left out, so I decided that an upgrade is in order. Unfortunately, the traditional iPod update takes place in September. Buying an iPod Touch now is going to leave me feeling out of the loop in a few months, so I won’t be doing that. In the mean time, I am left on iOS 3.x, looking on as all of the cool kids use shiny new apps like iBooks.
Maybe this is the only way of handling the update that made sense to Steve Jobs, but it is seriously bumming me out. Not only is it hindering me personally as a gadget nerd, but it is also halting me from covering more iOS 4 stories here on Macgasm. If it wasn’t for Apple’s need to control the news cycle, we’d probably have new iPod Touches alongside with the new iPhones.
