If you were wondering what software would be powering your Google glasses, Google’s CEO Larry Page confirmed today that it will be running on an Android based OS.
While it has long been speculated and assumed that Glass would run on Android, today is the first day that Google actually confirmed it. In a response to a question at Google’s first quarter earnings call today, Larry Page said, “obviously, Glass runs on Android, so [Android] has been pretty transportable across devices, and I think that will continue.”
While Glass may run on a modified version of the OS that we see on Android phones, this doesn’t mean that developers will simply be able to move apps over to run on the glasses. Google hasn’t released an API that gives developers direct access to the glasses’ hardware, so what developers can do with it is fairly limited.
Google Glass is still only available to those that won the contest to get early access to the device, so we will have to wait until its full release later this year to see how the product uses Android.
