Marissa Mayer, the CEO of Yahoo, just made Flickr free for three months. Normally a paid subscription is available for $25 a year, but the photo-sharing site is now making its unlimited Pro service free for a limited time. People who already subscribed get an extra three months for free.
Users will be able to view all of their photo library instead of just the last 200 images, upload unlimited photos, download originally-uploaded high-resolution photos, and upload and play unlimited HD videos with the service.
The timing of this offer might have something to do with the public outcry at Instagram’s change in its terms of service. Mayer might have a plan up her sleeve. Either she is using all of the Instagram kerfuffle to entice as many people into using Flickr instead of Instagram and ultimately get them hooked into Flickr Pro, or they might be testing out how much it would cost to offer Flickr completely free, and maybe just eliminate the Pro fee or possibly lift some of the limits on free users after March, when this offer ends.
Regardless of the reason, Flickr Pro is free for three months so you might as well give it a go if you’ve never used it before.
