Following the disappointing news that Google will be pulling the plug on Google Reader, Digg, a social news website, has decided to build its own. Digg plans to build a Google Reader replacement of its own with the same API and new features.
According to Digg’s blog, Google Reader is “a product worth saving. So we’re going to give it our best shot.” Digg was already planning to build a reader in the second half of this year, but with Google’s devastating news, it’s decided to move plans forward and start working on the project immediately.
Digg is hoping to identify and rebuild the features that made Google Reader so great, including its API, but also advance them to fit today’s Internet world and compete with other other networks and communities like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Reddit.
Digg is also asking for user input to make sure users get what they want out of the reader, including what problems it should solve, what’s useful, what isn’t, and what it should be able to do.
Google’s announcement sparked some real frustration among those who still use Google Reader, and a petition has even been going around. With Google Reader set to be laid to rest on July 1, there are a number of alternatives to choose from, and Digg could be the one for you. While we’re waiting to see what Digg comes up with, check out some of these options.
