New releases or not, what I really want to know is why Canadian prices went up.
So the ol’ bait and switch that Apple did with the “old” mac book isn’t really surprising, and I don’t really mind it all that much. The price difference is pretty sweet… for American users. What about the rest of us around the world? Well, not so much. In Canada I could get the cheapest Mac laptop for somewhere between 1099.00 and 1249.00 depending on the specs, and whether or not I’m a student. Cheapest Macbook now? 1,149.00. Looks like the more things change the more they stay the same. The cheapest “new” Macbook is actually a price increase overall to 1399.00. But here’s the real kick in the nuts. 1299.00 USD for that new Macbook in the US “should” be the equivalent of 1508.20 Canadian dollars according to the currency rates at the time of this post. So, the 1399.00 that we’re paying in Canada for the “new” Macbook works out to 1205.23 USD.
I don’t know if I should complain, or rejoice. But one thing is for certain. It you’re an American and live close to the border you’ll be saving on that Macbook if you buy it in Canada.
