Is Apple about to release new backlit keyboards?

The brand new iMacs have shipped with an interesting new setting in the Keyboard System Preferences. Owners of the new device now have the ability to “illuminate keyboard in low light conditions” at the click of a button.

According to MacGeneration, there are ambient light sensors next to the FaceTime camera on the display. The MacBook Pro lineup also have similar sensors that allow OS X to determine the brightness of both the screen and keyboard based on lighting conditions in a room.

Until now, iMacs and Cinema displays have been lacking the sensor. Seth Weintraub over at 9to5 Mac seems to think that it could possibly be proof that Apple’s preparing new backlit keyboards for the Mac lineup.

I know a lot of college students who would love a keyboard like that. Personally, I wouldn’t find much use for one these days, but there were plenty of times that I wanted my keyboard to light up while I was burning the midnight oil studying for exams.

The technology is easily implemented, and I wouldn’t exactly go out of my way to avoid one. Backlit keyboards are one of those things that you don’t know you need until you actually have one. The lights on the MacBook Pro keyboard have been a bit of a godsend.
