1. Tim Cook Speaks Out For Privacy
Tim Cook spoke in Washington, DC at EPIC’s Champions of Freedom dinner, and he stated his position on privacy pretty succinctly: “We believe that people have a fundamental right to privacy. The American people demand it, the constitution demands it, morality demands it”
In addition to taking potshots at government spying, he also took on Google and Facebook: “We believe the customer should be in control of their own information. You might like these so-called free services, but we don’t think they’re worth having your email, your search history and now even your family photos data mined and sold off for god knows what advertising purpose. And we think some day, customers will see this for what it is.”
TechCrunch reports on more of Cook’s speech, but I haven’t been able to find a full video.
Cook’s remarks might be corporate bullshit meant to disguise attacks at his competitor’s business practices, but it’s a better class of bullshit.
2. Catch The WWDC Keynote Live
Apple is once again planning to stream their WWDC keynote. You can catch the stream live here. Make sure to add it to your calendar if you’re forgetful.
3. NatGeo comes to Apple TV
Apple has added another cable channel has been added to the Apple TV lineup: If you’re a fan of NatGeo’s nature docs or reality shows, you can now catch them on your Apple TV—with the caveat that you’re a cable subscriber.
iMore reports reports that you can watch some clips and digital originals without a cable subscription. Though the Apple TV’s lot in life seems to be that of an AirPlay peripheral, the addition of these channels adds some utility.
4. Pinterest plots economic ruin.
Pinterest is already far more popular than most social networks: The site that specializes in using images of things people want to buy is finally trying to ensure that you can buy those things without leaving the site. Reducing “want” to “bought” to a twitchy impulse is probably going to be the monetization success story of the current bubble.
5. Thunderbolt Gets An Upgrade And A New Port
Intel clarified that we should all welcome our new USB C overlords. Thunderbolt will share a connector with USB C in version 3 of the standard, but will have a transfer speed of up to 40Gbps.
The unified Thunderbolt and USB port really does enable the ‘one port to rule them all’ of the MacBook. You can read up more about the tech here.
