Remember Mobile World Conference 2011 when RIM introduced the 4G PlayBook? Now, a year and a half later, Research in Motion may finally be following through with the release. Leaked documents from MobileSyrup show that the tablet will most likely be launched next week. The 4G Playbook will feature the same general specs as the Wi-Fi only model but will offer LTE and HSPA+ connectivity as well as a faster 1.5GHz dual-core chip and 32GB of on-board storage. The Playbook will still keep the same 7-inch screen, 1GB of RAM and 5-megapixel rear camera. According to the leaked documents, the 4G Playbook will launch on July 31, 2012, for $549.95 CAD unsubsidized from Canadian carriers.
Personally, I think that the price is still too high to compete with Apple’s iPad with 4G connectivity, as the iPad is just a little more expensive than the 4G Playbook is set to cost. And with RIM headed in the direction they’re heading, they can’t afford to have another failed launch.
Keep in mind these documents could be completely bogus, but they look pretty believable as of now. And while the tablet is set to launch on Bell in Canada, no U.S. carriers or launch dates have been listed. Do you plan on picking up one of these tablets for yourself? Or will you stick with your iOS or Android alternative? Let us know in the comments.
