When FaceTime was announced for the iPhone 4, many people were hoping that it would replace iChat on the Mac. Unfortunately, it did not. We still have iChat, and no FaceTime. Well that’s all about to change. According to Macsimum News, FaceTime will be part of the iLife ’11 Suite. Does this mean it will be announced at the October 20th event entitled “Back to the Mac”? Maybe, it’s possible that it will be centered around the Mac, and my guess is that iLife ’11 will play a part in this announcement.
This is big for FaceTime, because up until now you could only use FaceTime between the iPhone 4 or the iPod Touch 4th Generation. This opens the door to the Mac community as a whole. You won’t need the before mentioned iDevices to interact with them. In addition, “Apple is offering FaceTime as an open standard…,” which means that other developers can incorporate FaceTime with their platforms or applications. This is a very smart move for Apple in my opinion. It will show Apple as an open company and not a closed one. I can see this being used on the Android and Windows platforms, for phones and desktops, respectively. I don’t think you will be seeing this on Windows Phone 7, but it’s too early to say.
I’ve used FaceTime a few times with my wife, and when I got my kids the new iPod Touch. I’ve also used it with my cousin from across the country. It worked seamlessly between all devices. I could call my kids’ iPod Touches, and they could call mine and my wife’s iPhone 4s. That’s the beauty of FaceTime — it’s simple, and it works. Would you like to see FaceTime in iLife ’11?
